hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) is a well-established systemic marker of inflammation. Chronically elevated levels are linked to 'inflammaging' – inflammation-driven premature aging that can affect the skin. Observational studies have associated higher hsCRP with reduced skin elasticity, increased wrinkling, and impaired wound healing. However, the evidence is predominantly observational; randomized controlled trials demonstrating a causal effect are lacking. Moreover, hsCRP is non-specific: elevations can result from infections, obesity, smoking, or stress. A single hsCRP value does not diagnose skin aging. The clinical utility for individual anti-aging interventions remains limited. Lifestyle factors such as anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, and sleep can lower hsCRP and also benefit skin health. Consumer tests marketing hsCRP as a standalone skin-aging biomarker overstate its predictive power.
