How are HLA-DQ2 and Blutzucker related?

HLA-DQ2 is a genetic marker strongly associated with celiac disease. Celiac disease can indirectly affect blood sugar levels through gluten-induced intestinal damage, leading to malabsorption and chronic inflammation, which may impair glycemic control. However, there is no direct causal link between HLA-DQ2 and blood sugar in healthy individuals. The relationship is indirect: in celiac patients, a gluten-free diet can improve blood sugar regulation. Additionally, there is genetic overlap between celiac disease and type 1 diabetes, both autoimmune conditions. Still, HLA-DQ2 alone is not a predictor of blood sugar disturbances. Evidence for these connections is moderate (human studies), but insufficient for direct claims. Therefore, a DNA test for HLA-DQ2 should not be used to assess blood sugar risk. Established factors like diet, exercise, and family history of diabetes remain more clinically relevant.
