Myths vs facts: CRP Entzündung and fatigue

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a non-specific marker of inflammation, rising during acute or chronic inflammatory states. A common myth is that elevated CRP directly causes fatigue. In reality, fatigue is a frequent symptom of inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, infections), but CRP itself does not induce tiredness—it is a bystander marker. Fact: Chronically low-grade elevated CRP (e.g., due to obesity, smoking) is associated with fatigue in observational studies, but evidence is correlational, not causal. Many people with normal CRP feel exhausted, and vice versa. Interpreting individual CRP values from home tests is therefore misleading. Fatigue has multifactorial causes (sleep, stress, diet, exercise, mental health). A single CRP test cannot diagnose the root cause. If fatigue persists, a medical workup for treatable inflammation is warranted, but CRP alone is insufficient.
