How are Selen and Stress related?

Selenium is an essential trace element that, as a component of selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidases (GPx), plays a key role in antioxidant defense. Chronic psychological or oxidative stress can increase selenium turnover and affect the activity of selenium-dependent enzymes. A SNP in the GPX1 gene (rs1050450) has been associated with altered enzyme activity, but clinical relevance remains unclear. Evidence is largely mechanistic and from animal studies; large human trials are lacking. Selenium deficiency may theoretically impair stress resilience, but supplementation beyond the recommended daily intake is not generally advised – selenium is toxic in high doses. Consumer DNA tests cannot diagnose selenium status or stress disorders. Those wishing to assess their selenium status should use a validated laboratory test (e.g., whole blood selenium).
