How are Selen and Sport related?

The relationship between selenium and sport is not fully established. Selenium is an essential trace element that acts as an antioxidant via selenoproteins (e.g., glutathione peroxidases) and supports thyroid function. Intense exercise increases oxidative stress, so adequate selenium status might theoretically aid recovery. Some human studies suggest a link between low selenium levels and greater muscle damage after endurance exercise. However, results are inconsistent, and there is no robust evidence that selenium supplementation improves performance in well-nourished athletes. On the contrary, excessive intake (e.g., >400 µg/day) can be toxic (selenosis). Evidence comes mainly from observational and mechanistic studies; randomized controlled trials are lacking. Therefore, individual assessment (e.g., via blood test) is more prudent than blanket supplementation. For athletes without deficiency, a balanced diet (nuts, fish, eggs) suffices. MyBody-X tests (e.g., nutrient deficiency test) can measure selenium status, but interpretation should always be done by a physician.
