What to watch with FT4 and gut health?

FT4 (free thyroxine) is a key thyroid marker. Gut health can influence thyroid function via several pathways: the gut microbiome participates in deiodination of T4 to active T3; impaired gut barrier ('leaky gut') may trigger autoimmune reactions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, often associated with low FT4. Additionally, gut flora affects absorption of thyroid medications (e.g., levothyroxine). A MyBody-X test can identify genetic risk variants (e.g., in TPO, TG, DIO2) linked to thyroid function, but evidence is mostly mechanistic or from candidate gene studies. Direct blood FT4 measurements are more reliable. Watch for interactions: high-fiber diets can reduce thyroxine absorption; probiotics may alter conversion. If FT4 is abnormal or thyroid disease is suspected, consult an endocrinologist. The evidence for a direct causal gut–FT4 link is moderate and not fully clinically validated.
