How are FTO and weight loss related?

The relationship between FTO (Fat Mass and Obesity-associated gene) and weight loss is indirect and often overstated. Certain variants (e.g., rs9939609) are associated with higher BMI and increased obesity risk in large population studies. However, the effect is small – risk allele carriers typically weigh only about 2–3 kg more on average. For weight loss itself, studies indicate that carriers can lose weight just as effectively as non-carriers when following a calorie-restricted diet or exercise program. However, some evidence suggests the risk variant may be linked to stronger cravings for energy-dense foods and reduced satiety, potentially making long-term weight maintenance harder. Importantly, FTO is just one small piece of the puzzle. Diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress management have far greater impact. Genetic testing for FTO is not clinically actionable for weight loss. Evidence is based on GWAS and observational studies, not randomized controlled trials proving causation.
