Myths vs facts: COMT and Stress

COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) breaks down dopamine and other catecholamines. The common Val158Met variant alters enzyme activity: Val carriers have higher activity, Met carriers lower. This affects dopamine clearance and stress response. Met carriers tend to be more sensitive to stress but may perform better cognitively at baseline. The 'warrior vs worrier' myth oversimplifies: effects are small and context-dependent. Lifestyle, environment, and other genes dominate. No supplement has been proven to 'fix' COMT in RCTs. High-dose methyl donors (e.g., folate, SAMe) might even be counterproductive for Met carriers. Evidence comes from GWAS and cognitive studies, not clinical trials with hard outcomes. A consumer DNA test for COMT can offer hints but not a diagnosis or actionable plan. Stress management, sleep, and exercise are far more impactful than any gene-targeted supplement.
