SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) is produced in the liver and controls the bioavailability of sex hormones. Gut health can influence SHBG through the microbiome (estrobolome), which deconjugates estrogens and promotes their reabsorption, as well as through inflammation and insulin resistance. A dysbiotic gut may lower SHBG by increasing estrogen recycling. However, the evidence is still limited – mostly observational or mechanistic. For now, the most reliable ways to support healthy SHBG are maintaining liver health, good insulin sensitivity, normal thyroid function, and adequate protein intake. Directly targeting gut bacteria to raise SHBG is not yet evidence-based. Watch for low SHBG as a marker of metabolic syndrome or fatty liver; medical follow-up is recommended if values are abnormal.
