Homocysteine is an amino acid derived from methionine metabolism and cleared via the folate and vitamin B12 cycle. Elevated homocysteine is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has also been linked to neurological conditions. In the context of sleep, some observational studies suggest associations between higher homocysteine levels and sleep disturbances such as insomnia, sleep apnea, or shortened sleep duration. Proposed mechanisms include oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and impaired neurotransmitter synthesis (e.g., serotonin, melatonin).
