How are Zöliakie Test and Haut related?

A celiac disease test (blood test for antibodies like tTG-IgA) is used to diagnose celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten. The connection to the skin is primarily through dermatitis herpetiformis (Duhring's disease), a chronic, intensely itchy blistering skin condition considered the cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease. Dermatitis herpetiformis shares the same autoantibodies (tTG, endomysial antibodies) as classic celiac disease, and treatment is identical: a strict gluten-free diet. Not every celiac patient develops skin symptoms, but about 10–25% of affected individuals show skin changes. Conversely, nearly all patients with dermatitis herpetiformis have underlying celiac disease, even if intestinal symptoms are mild or absent. A positive celiac test can therefore indicate an increased risk for skin manifestations. Importantly, the test alone does not predict the severity of skin involvement; dermatological evaluation is necessary if skin symptoms are present. The evidence for this association is strong (human-strong), based on numerous clinical studies and guidelines. However, not all rashes in celiac patients are due to dermatitis herpetiformis – other causes like eczema or psoriasis may also occur.
