What role does SHBG play in allergy?

The direct role of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) in allergy is not clearly established. SHBG regulates the bioavailability of sex hormones like testosterone and estradiol, which can modulate immune responses and inflammation. Some observational studies suggest an association between low SHBG levels and increased risk of asthma or allergic rhinitis, particularly in women. However, the evidence is mostly mechanistic and insufficient for clinical recommendations. SHBG measurement alone is not a diagnostic marker for allergies. MyBody-X does not include SHBG in its standard allergy panel; if present, its predictive value is limited. Allergy diagnosis requires specific IgE tests and clinical evaluation.
