Is HbA1c useful for stress?

HbA1c reflects average blood glucose over 2–3 months and is a cornerstone for diabetes management. Stress can raise blood glucose acutely via cortisol and catecholamines, and chronic stress may contribute to sustained hyperglycemia through lifestyle changes. However, HbA1c is not validated as a stress biomarker. The link is mechanistic: stress influences glucose metabolism, but HbA1c lacks specificity and sensitivity for stress assessment. Clinical studies do not support using HbA1c to diagnose or monitor stress. For stress evaluation, validated tools include psychological questionnaires, salivary cortisol patterns, or heart rate variability. An elevated HbA1c should prompt diabetes screening rather than stress attribution. Caveat: Normal HbA1c does not rule out stress-related glucose spikes. Evidence is mechanistic/unclear; consumer tests marketing HbA1c for stress overstate its utility.
