How are TSH Schilddrüse and blood sugar related?

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is secreted by the pituitary gland and regulates thyroid function. Thyroid hormones T3 and T4 increase basal metabolic rate and influence carbohydrate metabolism. Hypothyroidism (elevated TSH) can lead to insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance, while hyperthyroidism (low TSH) can increase hepatic glucose production and worsen blood sugar control. However, the relationship is indirect and multifactorial – most people with normal thyroid function have no clinically relevant coupling between TSH and blood sugar. Direct-to-consumer DNA tests cannot measure TSH or blood sugar; they only analyze genetic variants with mostly small effects. If TSH or blood sugar levels are abnormal, medical evaluation is required. The evidence for the physiological link is human-strong, but for genetic prediction it is weak.
