When is IgE Allergie Alltag actually useful?

An IgE allergy test is useful in everyday life when specific allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, or respiratory distress occur after contact with certain substances (pollen, animal dander, foods). The test measures specific IgE antibodies against allergens and helps identify triggers. This enables targeted avoidance strategies or specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization). However, without clinical suspicion, an IgE test is not useful, as elevated IgE levels can also occur in parasitic infections, autoimmune diseases, or even in healthy individuals. There is no evidence that preventive IgE testing in asymptomatic people improves quality of life. The German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI) recommends IgE tests only when there is justified suspicion. Uncritical use often leads to false-positive results and unnecessary diets or avoidance behaviors. Therefore, IgE allergy tests are only useful in daily life when performed based on symptoms and medical indication.
