How are Transferrin and Allergie related?

Transferrin is an iron-transport protein that carries iron in the blood to cells. There is no well-established direct relationship between transferrin and allergies. However, indirect links exist: iron deficiency can impair immune function, particularly T‑cell activity and antibody production. Some studies suggest that altered iron status (e.g., low transferrin or high ferritin) may be associated with allergic conditions such as asthma or atopic dermatitis. The evidence is mostly mechanistic or from observational studies, not from randomized controlled trials. Moreover, inflammation itself can lower transferrin levels (negative acute-phase response), complicating interpretation. For clinical use as an allergy biomarker, the data are insufficient. Case reports or small studies do not provide robust evidence. Therefore, the utility of a transferrin test for allergy diagnosis or prognosis is currently very limited.
