How are FADS1 and Schlaf related?

The relationship between FADS1 and sleep is not yet well established. FADS1 encodes delta-5 desaturase, a key enzyme in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolism, converting alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into EPA and DHA. DHA is critical for brain cell membranes and has been linked to sleep regulation. Some research suggests that genetic variants in FADS1 may affect endogenous DHA synthesis, potentially influencing sleep quality. However, the evidence is weak: no large, replicated human studies directly demonstrate a causal effect of FADS1 polymorphisms on sleep parameters such as latency, duration, or deep sleep. Most data come from animal models or mechanistic studies. Sleep is also heavily influenced by environmental factors (light, stress, hormones, diet). Therefore, claiming that FADS1 determines your sleep is misleading.
