Homocysteine is a biomarker primarily linked to cardiovascular risk and B-vitamin status (folate, B6, B12). Elevated levels may indicate a deficiency in these vitamins or impaired methylation. Gut health influences the absorption of B vitamins, and the microbiome itself produces folate and B12. Thus, there is an indirect connection: a compromised gut barrier or dysbiosis could impair nutrient supply and raise homocysteine. However, homocysteine is not an established marker for gut health. Studies show that a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fermented foods can lower homocysteine while also supporting the gut microbiome. Direct clinical trials validating homocysteine as an indicator of gut disease are lacking. MyBody-X tests measuring homocysteine should therefore not be used as a standalone tool for assessing gut health. The evidence is largely mechanistic; for a reliable diagnosis, more specific gut markers (e.g., calprotectin, zonulin) or a medical workup are needed. Caveat: homocysteine levels are influenced by genetics, diet, and lifestyle – a single test says little about gut health.
