The link between homocysteine and gut health is an emerging area of research, but the evidence remains largely mechanistic. Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid derivative; elevated levels (hyperhomocysteinemia) are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Classic regulation involves vitamins B6, B12, and folate, which act as cofactors in homocysteine metabolism. Recent studies suggest the gut microbiota may play a role: certain bacteria produce folate and other B vitamins that can lower homocysteine levels. Additionally, impaired gut barrier function (leaky gut) might reduce absorption of these vitamins. However, human data are still scarce; most evidence comes from animal models or in vitro experiments. There are no robust clinical trials directly demonstrating that improving gut health (e.g., with probiotics) causally reduces homocysteine. Therefore, it is premature to infer a specific gut disorder from elevated homocysteine.
