CYP2C19 is a drug-metabolizing enzyme primarily known for processing medications like clopidogrel and proton pump inhibitors. A direct effect on blood sugar is not well established. Some mechanistic studies suggest CYP2C19 variants might indirectly influence glucose metabolism via endogenous substrates or drug interactions, but the evidence is weak and inconsistent. Clinical relevance for blood sugar control or diabetes is unclear. Therefore, a CYP2C19 genetic test cannot be recommended for managing blood glucose. Blood sugar is primarily influenced by diet, exercise, weight, and established biomarkers like HbA1c.
