When is IgE Allergie Labor actually useful?

An IgE allergy lab test is useful when a type I immediate hypersensitivity (e.g., hay fever, asthma, food allergy) is clinically suspected. It measures specific IgE antibodies against defined allergens (e.g., pollen, pet dander, peanuts). Evidence is strong for diagnosing IgE-mediated allergies, but not for vague symptoms like fatigue or 'allergy' without clear triggers. Caveat: a positive IgE alone does not confirm allergy – correlation with symptoms and possibly a provocation test is needed. The test is not suitable for food intolerances (e.g., lactose, histamine) or IgG-based tests, which are often marketed as 'allergy labs' but lack scientific backing. Beware of expensive panels with dozens of allergens without clinical relevance. The test is only useful when indicated by a physician based on a clear history.
