Helicobacter: what does this mean exactly?

Helicobacter (usually *Helicobacter pylori*) is a bacterium that can colonize the stomach lining. Infection is common and often asymptomatic, but it can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and rarely gastric cancer. Diagnosis is made via stool antigen test, breath test, or endoscopy. Some DNA tests offer risk assessments for Helicobacter-related conditions, but they cannot detect an active infection. The evidence linking *H. pylori* to gastric disease is strong (human-strong). However, the predictive value of genetic tests for individual infection risk is limited – infection depends mainly on environmental and hygiene factors.
