Risks and limits of FTO Labor

The FTO gene test (often called 'FTO Labor') analyzes a variant linked to obesity risk in GWAS studies. However, the effect size is small – carriers of the risk allele average only about 2–3 kg more body weight. Thus, the test cannot provide reliable individual prediction. Risks: 1) False reassurance – people may believe their weight is 'genetically determined' and neglect lifestyle factors that have a much larger impact. 2) Stigmatization or unnecessary anxiety, especially in children. 3) Misinterpretation – the test is not a medical diagnostic device. In Germany, genetic testing for medical purposes is regulated by the Genetic Diagnostics Act (GenDG); pure lifestyle tests without medical counseling are legally restricted. Evidence for personalized supplement or diet recommendations based solely on FTO is weak. Instead, blood biomarkers (e.g., ferritin, vitamin D) and medical advice are more actionable. Conclusion: The utility of FTO testing for individual health management is limited; evidence is based on GWAS, not clinical intervention trials.
