How are Ferritin and Allergie related?

The relationship between ferritin (the iron storage protein) and allergies is not well established in the scientific literature. Some observational studies suggest that low ferritin levels may be associated with a higher risk of allergic conditions such as atopic dermatitis or allergic rhinitis, possibly due to altered immune cell function or increased oxidative stress. Conversely, elevated ferritin can reflect chronic inflammation, which might exacerbate allergic responses. However, the effects are modest, findings are inconsistent, and ferritin is not a standard marker in allergy diagnostics. Direct-to-consumer genetic or blood tests claiming a strong link should be interpreted cautiously. For allergy assessment, specific IgE testing and clinical evaluation remain essential. The evidence is primarily mechanistic and observational; robust clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, any practical recommendations based solely on ferritin levels for allergy management are not supported.
