What role does ACTN3 play in Blutzucker?

ACTN3 encodes α-actinin-3, a protein found mainly in fast-twitch (type II) muscle fibers and linked to sprint performance. A direct role in blood glucose regulation is not established. Some studies suggest an indirect effect: individuals with ACTN3 deficiency (R577X polymorphism) may have altered muscle glucose uptake, since muscle is a major glucose consumer. However, the evidence is weak, mostly mechanistic or from small studies. No clinical recommendation exists to interpret blood sugar based on ACTN3 status alone. Other factors – diet, exercise, and genes like TCF7L2 or PPARG – have far greater impact. A consumer DNA test for ACTN3 is not useful for glycemic management.
