Myths vs facts: FUT2 and Langlebigkeit

The FUT2 gene (fucosyltransferase 2) determines secretor status and influences vitamin B12 absorption. A common myth is that a specific FUT2 variant directly determines longevity. In reality, some GWAS show a weak association between FUT2 polymorphisms (e.g., rs601338) and blood B12 levels, which may indirectly relate to cognitive health and longevity. However, the effects are small and not diagnostic. A MyBody-X test can report your genotype, but it does not predict your actual B12 levels or lifespan. A blood test for B12 and homocysteine is needed for clinical decisions. The evidence is GWAS-based, not clinically confirmed. Beware of overblown claims: genetics contribute only a small part to longevity – lifestyle, diet, and medical care are far more important.
