Evidence check: FTO in the context of Darmgesundheit

The claim that the FTO gene directly determines gut health is poorly supported by evidence. FTO (Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated) is one of the most robustly replicated obesity risk genes – variants are strongly associated with higher BMI, increased appetite, and altered food intake. Some studies suggest an indirect link: through energy balance and food preferences, FTO may influence gut microbiome composition. However, direct evidence for effects on gut barrier function, inflammation, or microbial diversity is lacking. Most findings come from GWAS and mechanistic models, not randomized human trials. Direct-to-consumer tests often overstate clinical relevance. Personalized nutrition based solely on FTO genotype is not evidence-based. Instead, general dietary guidelines for gut health (fiber, fermented foods, diversity) should take priority.
