ADH1B encodes an alcohol-metabolizing enzyme. Carriers of the fast variant (e.g., rs1229984, ADH1B*2) convert ethanol to acetaldehyde very rapidly, causing flushing, nausea, and headache – an aversive reaction that often limits intake. Regarding sleep: alcohol initially acts as a sedative but disrupts sleep architecture, reducing deep sleep and REM. In fast metabolizers, the sedative effect may be shorter, leading to earlier rebound awakenings. Additionally, acetaldehyde accumulation increases cancer risk. For anyone with sleep issues, alcohol avoidance is recommended; ADH1B variants naturally discourage consumption. Evidence is moderate (observational studies, GWAS).
