Stool samples (e.g., for microbiome analysis) are increasingly marketed to assess gut health. However, the scientific evidence for their clinical utility is mixed. While the gut microbiome composition correlates with various health aspects (e.g., inflammation, metabolism), there are no standardized reference ranges and few prospective studies showing that consumer stool tests directly improve gut health. Many commercial providers overstate their predictive power. A stool test can serve as a screening tool but does not replace medical diagnostics for conditions like IBS or IBD.
