Myths vs facts: HbA1c and Müdigkeit

HbA1c is a long-term glucose marker reflecting average blood sugar over 2–3 months. A common myth is that elevated HbA1c directly causes fatigue, or that fatigue is a reliable sign of high HbA1c. Fact: Fatigue can occur with poor glycemic control, but it is non-specific. Many people with normal HbA1c feel tired due to sleep deprivation, stress, iron deficiency, or thyroid issues. Conversely, many with mildly elevated HbA1c (prediabetes) report no notable fatigue. Evidence for a direct causal link between HbA1c and fatigue is moderate: studies show an association but not strong predictive value. An HbA1c test alone does not explain fatigue. If you have persistent tiredness, a broader workup is needed. The test is valuable for diabetes screening, not as a fatigue diagnostic.
