Can Transferrin help with Sport?

Transferrin is an iron-transport protein and a key biomarker of iron status. Optimal iron levels are important for athletes because iron is essential for oxygen delivery (hemoglobin) and mitochondrial energy production. Low transferrin saturation can indicate iron-deficiency anemia, which impairs endurance and performance. However, transferrin itself is not a direct performance enhancer. Measuring transferrin or transferrin saturation can be useful in sports medicine to detect iron deficiency early, but the evidence for using transferrin specifically to improve sport performance is weak and primarily mechanistic. Note that elevated transferrin can signal iron deficiency, while low saturation may be falsely normal during inflammation. Without a full blood count and medical evaluation, iron supplementation should not be started. For recreational athletes, a balanced diet usually suffices; elite athletes may benefit from targeted iron monitoring, but transferrin alone is not a sports supplement.
