Can FT3 help with longevity?

Whether FT3 (free triiodothyronine) can promote longevity is not supported by strong human evidence. FT3 is the active thyroid hormone and a key metabolic regulator. Maintaining FT3 within the normal reference range is essential for health, but no robust studies show that raising FT3 above normal extends lifespan. In fact, during critical illness, FT3 often drops (low T3 syndrome), which is associated with higher mortality—but this reflects disease severity, not a longevity intervention. Supplementing with T3 (e.g., liothyronine) carries risks: it can induce hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias, and muscle wasting. The evidence is mostly mechanistic or from animal models, not from human longevity trials. A single FT3 home test provides only a snapshot and cannot guide long-term health decisions. For longevity, proven strategies like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and stress management are far more impactful. Thyroid optimization should be done under medical supervision, with full context of TSH, fT4, and symptoms.
