Is LDL useful for Sport?

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is often labeled 'bad' cholesterol, but it is essential for the body, including athletes. LDL transports cholesterol to cells for membrane integrity, hormone production (e.g., testosterone), and vitamin D synthesis – all relevant for performance and recovery. However, there is no strong evidence that higher LDL directly improves athletic performance. In fact, elevated LDL, especially when combined with inflammation, increases cardiovascular risk, which can impair endurance and recovery over time. The evidence is mostly mechanistic and derived from general health studies; specific sport-related trials are lacking. For athletes, maintaining a balanced lipid profile (low LDL, adequate HDL) is prudent. Individual decisions should be guided by a physician, not by a single marker. LDL is useful in moderation, but not a performance booster.
