What should I know about CRP Test?

The CRP test measures C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation in the blood. It is commonly used to detect acute or chronic inflammation, such as from infections, autoimmune diseases, or tissue damage. A high level (>5 mg/l) indicates inflammation but is not specific—it does not pinpoint the cause or location. The high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) test is used for cardiovascular risk assessment, but only as part of a broader evaluation. Important: A normal CRP does not rule out inflammation, and mildly elevated levels can result from benign factors like smoking, obesity, or minor infections. Evidence is strong for acute inflammation detection and moderate for cardiovascular risk stratification. The test should always be interpreted by a physician. At-home tests without medical guidance risk misinterpretation and unnecessary anxiety.
