How are LDL and longevity related?

The relationship between LDL cholesterol and longevity is complex and modulated by many factors. LDL is a well-established risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, which are leading causes of death worldwide. Longitudinal studies show that elevated LDL levels are associated with reduced life expectancy, especially when combined with other risk factors like smoking, hypertension, or diabetes. However, the evidence is not straightforward: in older adults, the association weakens, and very low LDL levels may be linked to increased risks of hemorrhagic stroke or infections. Genetic studies (e.g., PCSK9 variants) demonstrate that lifelong lower LDL improves cardiovascular health, which can promote longevity. Yet LDL is only one piece of the puzzle – inflammation markers, lifestyle, diet, and other biomarkers are equally important. MyBody-X tests can measure LDL as part of a wellness check, but a single measurement is just a snapshot. For a robust longevity assessment, repeated measurements and a holistic approach are necessary. Evidence grade: human-moderate (strong association with cardiovascular events, but direct longevity effect is moderate and context-dependent).
