Schilddrüsen-TSH Wert Selbsttest: what are common causes?

An abnormal TSH value in a self-test can have many causes beyond thyroid disease. Common reasons include: hypothyroidism (elevated TSH), hyperthyroidism (low TSH), or subclinical forms. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, iodine deficiency/ excess, medications (e.g., lithium, amiodarone, glucocorticoids), stress, and sleep deprivation can also alter TSH. Additionally, TSH follows a circadian rhythm (higher in the morning) and may be affected by acute illness (sick euthyroid syndrome). A self-test cannot replace clinical diagnosis – follow-up should include fT3, fT4, antibodies, and possibly ultrasound. Evidence is moderate (guideline-based).
