Risks and limits of IgE Allergie Check

An IgE allergy test from a direct-to-consumer provider (e.g., MyBody-X) measures allergen-specific immunoglobulin E in the blood. Results can indicate sensitization, but not automatically a clinically relevant allergy. Many individuals have elevated IgE without symptoms (false positives). Conversely, a negative IgE does not rule out allergy, as non-allergic hypersensitivity or local IgE reactions may occur. The tests usually cover only a limited panel of allergens – often missing seasonal pollens, molds, or occupational substances. Moreover, the allergen extracts used vary in quality and standardization. Without a medical history and provocation tests, clinical relevance remains unclear. Risks lie mainly in misinterpretation: unnecessary diets, avoidance behaviors, or false reassurance. The German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI) recommends IgE testing only when there is a justified suspicion and in combination with specialist evaluation. Direct-to-consumer tests do not replace allergological diagnostics.
