Can Ferritin help with fatigue?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Low ferritin levels can indicate iron deficiency, a common cause of fatigue—especially in women with heavy menstruation, vegetarians, or those with chronic blood loss. In such cases, replenishing iron stores (e.g., through supplementation under medical guidance) may reduce fatigue. However, ferritin is not a direct 'anti-fatigue' remedy: high ferritin (e.g., from inflammation or hemochromatosis) is not helpful and can be harmful. A MyBody-X test measures ferritin in blood, but interpretation requires a physician because ferritin is an acute-phase reactant that can fluctuate. The evidence linking iron deficiency to fatigue is human-strong (numerous studies), but measuring ferritin alone without a complete blood count and inflammatory markers is insufficient. For persistent fatigue, a doctor should determine the underlying cause before any intervention.
