Sleep genetics is a growing but still limited field. Variants in genes like PER3, CLOCK, MTNR1B (rs10830963), and ADRB1 have been associated with chronotype, sleep duration, and sleep onset. However, effect sizes are small – a single variant typically explains less than 1 % of the variance. Most direct-to-consumer sleep genetic tests overstate their clinical utility. For example, the G allele in MTNR1B is linked to slightly higher fasting glucose, not directly to sleep quality. Evidence comes from GWAS and candidate gene studies, but randomized controlled trials showing benefit of genotype-guided sleep interventions are lacking. Moreover, many wellness labs (see context) market unnecessary tests with weak evidence. Healthy sleep hygiene, consistent bedtimes, and regular exercise have far stronger effects than any genetic information. Caution: personalized sleep optimization via DNA tests is not evidence-based at this time.
