Myths vs facts: Helicobacter and fertility

Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is primarily known for causing gastritis and ulcers, but its role in fertility is a topic of debate. Myth: Hp directly causes infertility. Fact: Some studies suggest that chronic Hp infection may contribute to fertility issues through systemic inflammation, immune modulation, or effects on the reproductive tract. For example, Hp has been associated with reduced sperm quality in men and with implantation failure in women. However, the evidence is mixed and largely observational. Many studies have small sample sizes or fail to control for confounders like age, smoking, or other infections. A causal link has not been established.
