Evidence check: APOA2 in the context of fertility

APOA2 encodes apolipoprotein A-II, a component of HDL particles involved in lipid transport and inflammation modulation. Some studies link APOA2 variants (e.g., rs5082) to dietary fat response and BMI, which can indirectly affect fertility through obesity or metabolic health. However, direct evidence for a role in human fertility (e.g., oocyte quality, sperm function) is limited. Most data come from mechanistic or animal studies, with weak associations in PCOS or male subfertility but no robust GWAS findings. The evidence level is 'mechanistic/mixed'. Consumer DNA tests often overstate such links. For fertility assessment, lifestyle, hormonal balance, and polygenic factors are far more relevant than a single APOA2 variant. Clinical utility is absent.
