What can the Schilddrüsen-TSH Wert Selbsttest tell you — and what not?

A thyroid TSH self-test (e.g., from a pharmacy) measures TSH levels from a capillary finger-prick blood sample. It can provide a rough indication of possible thyroid dysfunction – especially hypothyroidism (elevated TSH) or hyperthyroidism (low TSH). What it cannot do: make a definitive diagnosis, measure actual thyroid hormones (fT3/fT4), detect autoantibodies, or identify the underlying cause. Interpretation without medical guidance is risky because TSH fluctuates diurnally and is affected by medications, stress, or other illnesses. Most such tests are not certified as medical devices or have limited validation. Evidence for their utility in the general population is weak; they do not replace professional lab diagnostics. Caveat: an abnormal result should always be discussed with a doctor, as should a normal result if symptoms persist. Self-tests can lead to false reassurance or unnecessary anxiety.
