What to watch with Helicobacter and allergy?

The relationship between Helicobacter pylori and allergies is complex and not fully understood. Some epidemiological studies suggest that H. pylori infection, especially with certain strains, may reduce the risk of allergic diseases like asthma, hay fever, or atopic dermatitis (hygiene hypothesis). Other studies found no effect or even an increased risk. Mechanistically, H. pylori releases immunomodulatory molecules that can influence T-cell responses. Importantly, H. pylori is a major risk factor for gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. Eradication therapy is therefore recommended when active infection is confirmed, regardless of allergies. However, there is weak observational evidence that eradication might worsen allergic symptoms in some individuals. For consumers: an H. pylori test (stool or breath) is not an allergy test. If you have allergies and are H. pylori-positive, discuss eradication with your doctor, but do not avoid it solely due to fear of allergy exacerbation. MyBody-X does not offer an H. pylori test; its DNA tests focus on food intolerances, not infections. Be cautious with IgG tests for H. pylori – they indicate past exposure, not active infection.
