How are Cortisol senken and Stress related?

Cortisol is the primary stress hormone. In acute stress, the adrenal cortex releases cortisol to mobilize energy and maintain homeostasis. However, chronic elevation – due to ongoing psychosocial stress, poor sleep, or overtraining – can lead to negative health outcomes such as visceral fat accumulation, immune suppression, insulin resistance, and cognitive decline. 'Lowering cortisol' therefore typically refers to regulating the stress response. Evidence-based approaches include: adequate sleep, regular moderate exercise, mindfulness/meditation, social support, and a balanced diet (e.g., limiting excessive caffeine and sugar). Supplements like ashwagandha or phosphatidylserine show moderate effects in some studies but are not standalone treatments. Importantly, abnormally low cortisol (adrenal insufficiency) is dangerous. Without a medical diagnosis, one should not attempt to arbitrarily lower cortisol. The evidence linking stress and cortisol is strong (human-strong), but for specific lowering interventions it is often moderate.
