What role does IgE Allergietest play in allergy?

The IgE allergy test measures specific immunoglobulin E antibodies to allergens. It can indicate sensitization, but not necessarily clinical allergy. Many people have IgE without symptoms. The test is useful as an adjunct to history, but not as a standalone diagnosis. Evidence is moderate: sensitization does not equal disease. Caveat: overinterpretation can lead to unnecessary diets or anxiety. A positive test should always be correlated with symptoms.
