Evidence check: LCT in the context of Wechseljahre

The link between LCT (lactase persistence) and menopause is poorly studied. LCT determines adult lactose digestion capacity – a genetically fixed trait unaffected by menopause. However, hormonal shifts (e.g., declining estrogen) can alter gut motility and sensitivity, potentially worsening bloating regardless of LCT genotype. A genetic test for lactose intolerance may be useful if digestive issues are present, but it does not replace medical evaluation. Evidence for a direct LCT–menopause connection is weak; it remains mechanistic speculation without dedicated human trials. MyBody-X DNA tests can report LCT status, but interpretation should be cautious. Caveat: single-gene effect sizes are small; diet and lifestyle matter more.
