How are TSH and Blutzucker related?

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and blood glucose are linked through thyroid hormone action. TSH controls the release of T3 and T4, which regulate basal metabolic rate, insulin sensitivity, and glucose uptake. In hypothyroidism (elevated TSH), reduced thyroid hormone levels often lead to insulin resistance and higher fasting glucose, increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. In hyperthyroidism (low TSH), excess thyroid hormones can increase hepatic glucose production and accelerate glucose turnover, also potentially raising blood glucose. However, these effects are moderate and vary between individuals. Stress, cortisol, and inflammation can simultaneously influence both TSH and glucose. An isolated high TSH without other abnormalities does not directly indicate a glucose disorder. Clinical relevance is strongest in overt thyroid disease.
