How are Progesteron and Wechseljahre related?

Progesterone and menopause (Wechseljahre) are closely related: during perimenopause, ovarian progesterone production declines sharply, often before estrogen drops. This relative progesterone deficiency can contribute to irregular cycles, worsened PMS-like symptoms, sleep disturbances, and mood swings. In postmenopause, progesterone is barely detectable. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) often combines estrogen with progesterone (or progestins) to protect the endometrium and alleviate symptoms. The evidence is clinically well-established, but based on HRT studies, not on individual genetic tests. A standalone progesterone blood test without clinical context is of limited value because levels fluctuate with the menstrual cycle. For menopausal symptoms, a medical evaluation including history and possibly hormone profiling is recommended.
