Can ADH1B help with blood sugar?

ADH1B encodes alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that metabolizes ethanol. Certain variants (e.g., ADH1B*2) result in faster alcohol clearance and influence drinking behavior. Some GWAS have linked ADH1B variants to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, but this effect is indirect, mediated by alcohol consumption. There is no strong evidence that ADH1B directly regulates blood sugar levels. The associations are small and not clinically actionable for blood sugar management. Therefore, using ADH1B genetic results to guide dietary or lifestyle interventions for blood sugar control is not evidence-based. The evidence is limited and should be interpreted cautiously.
