The link between ADH1B variants and allergies is indirect and not strongly supported. ADH1B encodes alcohol dehydrogenase, which metabolizes alcohol. Certain variants (e.g., ADH1B*2) cause faster alcohol breakdown and acetaldehyde accumulation, which can trigger histamine release and allergy-like symptoms (flushing, sneezing). This is often mistaken for true allergy. A direct causal relationship with atopic allergies (pollen, food) is not established. For suspected histamine intolerance or alcohol sensitivity, a DNA test on ADH1B and ALDH2 may provide clues but does not replace clinical allergy testing.
